5 Elements of an Artful Kitchen

Summer projects are underway in South Florida!  In fact, it's the height of the busy season for most design professionals here.

I don't have to tell you that a new kitchen is a big investment, in fact the kitchen is the most expensive renovation you're ever likely to undertake. It stands to reason that you'd want a kitchen that is tailor-made for you whether you can afford custom or not. This is what we're all about at Artful Kitchens.

Flawless function behind the scenes from Poggenpohl

The concept of an "artful kitchen" has many different facets.  It is not just about budget or the amount of space you have but the skill you employ using what is available to you. Here are five tips to consider along with some visual inspiration featuring products I saw this year at the Kitchen & Bath Industry (KBIS) trade show in Las Vegas. Implement these with style and confidence and you will be the proud owner of an artful kitchen!

1. Flawless Function

I'm all about artistic expression but a major part of creativity in the kitchen comes from devising flawless function. This quality is not something you see but something you can experience if artfully accomplished.  When I say function, I mean work centers comprised of cooking, clean up and food prep areas.Steve Jobs quote

Those are the basics but you could have more such as a beverage center (think coffee, tea, wine), a computer station or a baking center.  If you have a two-cook kitchen, your layout should be designed so that any one of the major functions can be performed without anyone getting underfoot.

Precis sink by Blanco

Following the guidelines set by the NKBA is a must to make sure all clearances are adequate. Sometimes we don't have a lot of choice about where to locate our sink or appliances but we can organize our utensils, dishes, pots and food items in a more efficient way.  Don't forget the more flawlessly your kitchen functions the safer it is. You don't have to be an expert at this, just think about how you use your kitchen so that you will be a good collaborator when it comes time to work with a professional.

2. Personalization

This is, without a doubt, the biggest movement in the design world.  An artful kitchen is your own personal statement customized to the way you live.  It could be a steam oven because healthy eating is your passion or it could be a lovely furniture piece with glass doors to display your grandmother's china. Include the colors you love.  Even though you must be mindful of your budget (everyone has one), strive to retain the essence of what you see as your dream kitchen.

3. Harmony

Harmony is one of the principles of design and a must for your kitchen.  Whenever I design a two-toned kitchen I like to ensure that different finishes and details are carried through the space to create a cohesive whole.  It's about how the floor relates to the cabinets and  how the cabinet hardware relates to the faucet. You get the picture!  It does not mean that everything has to match perfectly, it means elements should relate to and complement each other. It also does not mean that every element has to be perfectly symmetrical.  In fact, consider this permission NOT to be! I find that the best rule of thumb is to follow the architecture and style of the home you're in.  If, for example, the kitchen window is way off center you should work with that not against it.  Never force solutions by sacrificing function.

4. Focal Point

Every piece of great artwork has a focal point.  It is the "star of the show", so to speak.  In a kitchen it can be a sculptural range hood, a granite counter with big bold movement or actually a piece of art! It is the item that makes you say WOW when you enter the kitchen.  Just remember less is more here.  One great focal point is probably enough.  Too much and the statement gets lost. Less is definitely more.

5. Texture

The element of texture involves at least two of our senses, touch and sight.  The textures you are likely to come across include the glossy finishes popular in contemporary design, prominent wood grains which can be traditional or modern and smooth honed surfaces that are more matte.  A flat slab cabinet door is a great choice if you plan to use a wood with a lot of pattern and graining.  In this case the material is the decorative element of the cabinet.  On the other hand, if you are traditional and you are using white cabinets you can select a door with some molding or detail.  Also let the wild patterns either be on your cabinets or on your counter, both would be busy and distracting.

5 Things To Do Before Remodeling Your Kitchen

A new kitchen can be life changing.  The process of obtaining one definitely is!  Make no mistake, it's stressful and expensive but it can also be fun and adventurous, with a little preparation.  Here are five steps, culled from my 20 plus years in the biz, that can help make the process less about stress and more about adventure!delray dream bamboo kitchen feature Collect Your Thoughts & ImagesI have always been a big proponent of what I call "kitchen scrapbooking".  It's the best way to begin. Collecting your ideas is now easier than ever with resources like Houzz.com, Pinterest and Modenus.  Just grab what appeals to you for whatever reason.  This is the way to identify your style.  Sometimes a picture is what it takes.  You may choose 12 pics and 10 of them feature black counter tops!  Maybe you hadn't even consciously thought of that preference.  Get the picture?stock-footage-couple-at-home-man-working-on-a-laptop-computer-at-the-kitchen-table-while-woman-pours-teaConsult a proOnce you have some good ideas about what type of appliances, cabinets etc. you'd like to see in your kitchen run it by a pro.  I have always felt that the best projects are the result of great collaborations.  The more you bring to the table, the more your kitchen will be a unique reflection of your own personality and lifestyle.  My job is to make sure you know all your options and to translate them into a functional and beautiful plan.  A large (and fun) part of my job is staying educated on the latest products and technologies and I am excited to share that info with my clients.  Most kitchen designers will work with you at whatever level you require from simple consultations to full blown project management including design, supply and installation.  When you're making an investment in a new kitchen consulting with  a trusted and knowledgeable professional is a small price to pay!Temporary KitchenCreate a temporary kitchenOnce the madness begins you can realistically expect your kitchen to be down at least ten days or so, maybe longer depending on various factors.  Having a functioning temporary kitchen will be your saving grace.  If you have a laundry room with a sink that is a good start.  Locate your refrigerator close by.  If you have a microwave hood you can set it on a table or other surface.  Just plug it in and you're good to go.  Slow cookers are a good idea too.  If you are a domestic diva, start freezing meals!  Pack a box with your everyday necessities such as glasses, plates, cutlery, cups etc. and don't forget the coffee pot.  The more time you take to think this part through and set it up, the happier you'll be during the process.  Trust me.NKBA Kitchen and Bath PlannerBe prepared to go over budgetBudgeting for your new kitchen can seem daunting.  It is.  You think you've thought of everything but then something else is bound to appear.  There are some tools that can help.  Check out the free downloadable Kitchen & Bath Planner available here from the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA)GE example of counter depth vs standardPick your battlesYou will be faced with an overwhelming amount of choices as you work  through the process and you're going to have to decide what your priorities  are.  Unfortunately, usually, we can't have it all.  Pick three.  Think of the  things that will add the most value for YOU!  Those should be your splurges.  You can save money elsewhere.  It's just like clothes.  Investing in that one  great handbag or pair of shoes or scarf can elevate the style factor of a whole  outfit.  In the kitchen it could be a counter top, a particular tile or cabinet  finish that you fall in love with but it can also be something like investing in a  counter depth refrigerator that doesn't stick out a foot if your tight on space. There you have it, if you've been looking for a place to begin, this is a great start.  Don't hesitate to email me for help at kitchensforliving@gmail.com.  If you've experienced a kitchen renovation, what would you add to this list?

Du Verre, The Hardware Co., Sustainably Beautiful

As a designer I'm always on the look out for products that will make my kitchens one of a kind.  Sometimes the necessary functionality of cabinet boxes can be redundant.  As much as I tell clients "less is more", I can't fight the fact that most of us have lots of stuff and we need our storage, dammit!  One way to add a little artfulness is with cabinet hardware.  Du Verre The Hardware Co. is one of the companies I discovered on the Modenus Blog Tour New Orleans.  Then, you know how you learn about something and then all of a sudden it seems to pop up everywhere?  That's what happened to me and Du Verre.  Whilst writing about the NKBA design winning kitchen below I discovered that the hardware used was none other than the Forged 3 Collection by, you guessed it, Du Verre!

Clodagh, who worked on the Primitive, Stacked and Tribal collections, is known for intelligent use of materials and natural elements.  One hallmark of contemporary design is minimalism yet there has to be enough.  "Clutter can undermine serenity, but minimalism should not be self denying", says Clodagh.

Your Chance to Make a Difference

http://vimeo.com/64400893Last month I told you about the continuing recovery efforts eight years after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.  This is what's transpired since my post.  Modenus, has launched a campaign to get the word out.  We'll be having a live Twitter chat tomorrow, Thursday, May 9 from 4-5pm EST.  Please join, get involved, donate and help these people out.    #blogtourNOLA will get you to the right place on Twitter.  Funds raised during the Twitter chat  will be dedicated exclusively to Joe and the St Paul’s Homecoming Center.  Below is an excerpt of the story. Above is a video taken on the day of our visit to the Gentilly neighborhood of Joe and Gloria Robert.  You can find more on the Modenus website here.Joe and Gloria Robert of New Orleans were newlyweds looking forward to a bright future together when Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast in August 2005.Residing in their new house for just one month before Katrina slammed the city, the couple lost everything when the levee behind their house was destroyed - one of 53 levees in the city breached by the storm surge – and canal water swallowed the home. The Roberts evacuated the city, staying with various friends and relatives. When the flood waters receded weeks later, Joe and Gloria moved into a pop-up camper in their driveway for a while, but they’ve also been staying with Joe’s daughter from a previous marriage.Nearly eight years later, Joe and Gloria’s house is still uninhabitable. While a new house has been framed out, the building lacks essentials including electrical, drywall, flooring and plumbing.  Because Joe is a contractor by trade, he has the skills to work on his house, but he has generously donated much of his free time to volunteering with St. Paul’s Homecoming Center helping to rebuild other people’s houses.Joe works on his home little by little, but is often derailed by setbacks such as having his house broken into and his tools stolen. Even though Joe was forced to save up until he could replenish his tool supply, he has not lost his faith in humanity.Fortunately, Joe and Gloria received some good news recently when Storehouse of World Vision selected the couple and their house for a rehab project. A few weeks ago Storehouse joined forces with the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) and St. Paul’s Homecoming Center to help rehab kitchens and baths in three houses as a lead-in to NKBA’s Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) held April 19-21 in New Orleans. While Storehouse and NKBA partners have donated materials, appliances and labor for a new kitchen and bath in the Robert’s house, the rest of the unfinished home still needs lots of TLC.PLEASE GIVE NOWAbout Storehouse of World VisionWorld Vision’s Storehouse network is comprised of six warehouses across the U.S. that receive corporate donations of new, top-quality goods made available to local community partners for distribution. Goods that are distributed include building materials, school supplies, personal care items, and clothing to over 2.2 million people in low-income communities annually. About the National Kitchen & Bath AssociationNow celebrating its 50th Anniversary, the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) is a not-for-profit trade association that owns the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS®).
